ArtSpan is pleased to announce that both ACY supported schools had artwork displayed at the Young at Art Festival at the de Young Museum May 8-16, 2010.

Bessie Carmichael Elementary School will have a Totem Pole special group project from Dr. Alcaide's 5th grade class, under the artistic direction of Beryl Landau.

Buena Vista Elementary School will have 6 entries of Bas Relief Sculptures from Jeanna Chavetta's 5th grade classes, also under the artistic direction of Teaching Artist of Beryl Landau. Buena Vista will additionally have 8 entries of paper mache Fantasy Animals from Antoinette Marquez's 4th grade class, under the artistic direction of Rob Lowrey.

Bessie Carmichael's Arts Coordinator Irene Aragon and Principal Jeffrey Burgos; Buena Vista's submissions to the Young at Art Festival.

The ACY program is comprised of two separate but complementary arts projects: an Eight-week Residency in the Spring and the Three-part SF Open Studios Tours in the Fall. Seven artists from the SF Open Studios program were contracted as Teaching Artists to meet the goals of the Art for City Youth program.

ArtSpan has worked with Bessie Carmichael Elementary School for the past six years.  Principal Jeffrey Burgos and Arts Coordinator Irene Aragon are devoted to ensuring that arts have a place in the curriculum. With their help and guidance, ArtSpan continues to grow and develop the Art for City Youth program. The overarching outcome is to say that BCES students received deep visual arts education every year. This level of comprehensive arts programming would not be possible without Bessie Carmichael's unwavering commitment and the support of ArtSpan donors and members.
