PROGRAMS

San Francisco Open Studios

Started in 1975, SF Open Studios is a program designed to bridge the gap between artists and art patrons. For four weekends in a row, artist all over San Francisco open their doors to the public. The artists control pricing, curating, and ambience and can gain exposure for their unique art, build mailing lists, and sell their work. Art enthusiasts get a rare peek at what lies behind the studio door, meet emerging and established artists, and build collections - all while exploring San Francisco's diverse neighborhoods. For more information on SF Open Studios and to find out how to register for SF Open Studios 2008, click here.

The SF Open Studios Guide is a free, comprehensive catalog (ISSN 1534-8210) distributed around the Bay Area and functions as both a user-friendly guide to San Francisco Open Studios and a year-round resource. This magazine serves art collectors, art dealers, restaurant owners, interior designers and other art enthusiasts who want to contact artists directly. The magazine includes artwork and contact information for over 500 San Francisco artists and articles on art collecting.

The SF Open Studios Exhibition features more than 400 artworks by different participating artists in a democratic forum and provides prospective studio visitors with a centralized location to preview and purchase artwork while facilitating the opportunity to plan their individual tour schedules. Hung salon-style by geographic location, the SF Open Studios Exhibition is held at the SomArts Main Gallery and serves as an important centripetal hub for SF Open Studios related publicity and fundraising events, such as Private Preview Gala on Saturday, October 4, 2008, and the Exhibition Opening Reception on Sunday, October 5, 2008. The SF Open Studios Exhibition will be open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays from October 5, 2008 through October 26, 2008.

Art for City Youth

Art for City Youth (ACY) helps students enjoy art by making and discussing art with professional artists. SF Open Studios artists provide Bessie Carmichael Elementary School students with a classroom lesson on how to look at art, a docent tour of the SF Open Studios Exhibition, and a hands-on art class. The program gives artists experience working with youth and publicizes their ability to work with schools and community groups. For more information on this program, click here.

The application process to teach in next year's Art for City Youth Program has begun! Starting in September 2008 and continuing through April 2009, there are four exciting teaching opportunities available to SF Open Studios Artists. The Art for City Youth Program brings San Francisco youth and artists together to share conversation and artmaking through activities such as SF Open Studios Youth tours and artist residencies within the public schools. Applications are due Monday, June 9th. Click here to learn more about the program and to download the application form.
